about

Following up the December 2011 release of the "Single Payer Class War" 7", Oakland's Manatee have been busy in 2012, playing a string of very well-received shows around the Bay Area and in LA, and working on a new batch of songs that will comprise their debut album, due in Spring 2013. Their live set is a real head-turner, relentless and energetic in the extreme. Never sacrificing their inherent tunefulness, the songs are frantic, barely-controlled bursts of melodic fury, packed with guitar crunch galore, often exploding into shards of uncontrolled feedback.

The songs on this EP were recorded in July 2012 for LA's esteemed Part Time Punks club. Three original songs were completed, along with a raging cover of The Cure's "A Forest." "Try Being Human" is a modish little tune clocking in at a brisk 1:05, full of slashing guitars and Moon-ish drum chaos. "Crisis Time" is one of the band's more recent tunes, a no-nonsense mid-tempo punk tune that with an out-of-control stun guitar break in the middle. Long-time live Manatee favorite "Things Falling Down" wraps up the set in fine fashion, a high-velocity rocker with a little rockabilly flavor.

Recorded mostly live with minimal studio trickery, this session continues Manatee's evolution and points to an interesting 2013 for the band.

Oakland's mysterious Manatee are a fiery 4-piece who chart a fine line between the melodic aggression of mid-80s hardcore/punk and more contemplative rocking pop. Originally a vehicle for beer-fueled weekly noise fests, Manatee have started accruing a catalog of tunes that are influenced by Flying Nun bands, '77 punk and psychedelic freeform noise, and releasing a series of limited singles. ... more
